In Fifth Grade we are still very interested in using the Sumi-e tools.  Today, I gave a quick demonstration to accompany our discussion of different concepts artists use to create the illusion of distance in a 2 dimensional work of art.  The concepts we discussed included using a paler hue for details in the distance, leaving details out of objects in the distance, overlapping, and varying the size of objects to create depth.  We mentioned linear perspective and using a perspective grid, but we will save those ideas for later.
Students practiced for a while as they dreamed up their final compositions.
